Is your cell phone spying on you? Here's how to find out

Michele

Have you ever had the feeling that your cell phone is "listening" to you? You talk about a product and a few minutes later an advertisement appears about exactly that?
Many people have the same impression - and it's no coincidence.

Modern cell phones have microphones, cameras, location tracking and applications that, if improperly configured, can monitor you without you even realizing it.
But calm down: this doesn't mean that someone is watching you all the time. However, understanding how these accesses work can protect your privacy and security.

Is it true that the cell phone hears what I say?

Yes - but with your consent.
Many applications, such as virtual assistants (Google Assistant, Siri, Alexa) and social networks, use the microphone to improve the user experience.

The problem starts when apps use this resource unnecessarilyThey can pick up sounds and conversations even when they're not in use.
This can happen due to poor configuration or even malicious applications.

And although the big companies deny continuous listening, there are numerous reports and studies that show that certain information captured by audio can influence the ads that appear.

How do I know if my cell phone is spying on me?

Look out for some signs that could indicate undue monitoring:

1# Battery runs out too quickly

If your cell phone gets hot or the battery runs out faster even when it's at rest, it could be that applications are running in the background with constant use of the microphone or location.

2# Data usage is abnormal

You can check it on your cell phone which apps are using too much mobile dataeven when they are not in the foreground.

3# Strange noises during calls

Frequent wheezing or strange cuts may indicate parallel activities in the background. It's not common, but it deserves attention.

4# Camera or microphone turning on by itself

If the microphone or camera light comes on by itself, even for fractions of a second, this is a sign that some application is accessing these resources without you realizing it.

5# Applications that ask for unnecessary permissions

A flashlight app, for example, doesn't need access to the microphone or your contacts. If it does, there's something wrong.

How do I check which apps are accessing the microphone and camera?

On Android:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy > Permissions manager
  2. Click on Microphone e Camera
  3. See which apps have access - and revoke those that don't make sense

You can also access it:

  • Settings > Battery > Battery usage to see apps that consume energy in the background
  • Settings > Networks > Data usage to check internet consumption by app

On the iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone / Camera
  2. Check which apps have permission
  3. Disable for those that don't make sense

The iPhone also shows a orange light (microphone) or green light (camera) at the top of the screen when these features are being used.
If you show up for no reason, is a sign that something might be wrong.

How to protect yourself from cell phone spying?

1. Review permissions frequently

Many apps ask for access to everything by default. Go to settings and revoke what is not necessary.

2. Only install apps from trusted sources

Avoid downloading apps outside the Play Store or App Store. Too many apps from unknown sources contain spyware.

3. Use a reliable antivirus

Apps like Norton, Avast and Kaspersky for cell phones detect malicious apps or apps with suspicious behavior.

4. Watch out for links and pop-ups

Avoid clicking on links sent by strangers on WhatsApp, SMS or email. They can install spyware without you even realizing it.

5. Use VPN for more security

If you use public Wi-Fi, a VPN helps protect your data from being intercepted.

6. Always update the operating system

Updates correct security flaws. Keeping your phone out of date is to open the door to espionage.

Applications that require the most care

Some types of apps often request access to a lot of data. Be especially vigilant with:

  • Photo editing and filter apps
  • Flashlights, voice recorders and memory wipers
  • Games of dubious origin or without a clear developer
  • Free tracking apps

Always ask yourself: "Why does this app need a microphone, camera or location?"

How do I know if someone is monitoring my cell phone remotely?

Unfortunately, there is a possibility that someone will install spyware on your cell phone without you realizing it.

Some signs:

  • The device switches itself on and off
  • Apps disappear or appear for no reason
  • Very high battery and data consumption
  • You hear echoes in calls
  • Cell phone crashes or heats up frequently

If you get suspicious, do the following:

  • Check the list of installed apps and exclude those you don't recognize
  • Restore your phone to factory settings (this deletes everything, including spyware)
  • Change all your passwords after restoration
